Finding the Confidence to Retire After Loss

You work, and work, and work - but when can you actually retire? When have you saved enough? It's one of the most common questions we hear as financial advisors, and too often the honest answer people give themselves is "never." Without someone to give them the green light, many people work far longer than they'd like to, driven by the fear of running out.

That was where "Client A" found himself when we first met. Still working and recently widowed, he wanted nothing more than to enjoy retirement with his kids and grandkids. But the thought of walking away from a steady W-2 paycheck was paralyzing. Without that guaranteed money hitting his account each month, he wasn't sure he could retire at all - and if he did, he imagined a small life built around Social Security alone, since that was the only "paycheck" he could count on.

On top of that, he had a second goal that mattered deeply to him: leaving a meaningful legacy to his children.

We started where we always do - with his life, not his portfolio. What did a comfortable retirement actually look like for him? What did he want to be able to do, and what did he want to leave behind?

From there, we built a retirement income plan designed to do two things at once: replace the paycheck he was afraid to give up, and keep his money working toward the legacy he cared about.

We structured roughly 40% of his portfolio in more conservative holdings designed to cover his essential income needs, positioned to fill the entire gap between his Social Security and the comfortable lifestyle he wanted. The remaining 60% stayed invested for growth - so his assets could continue building over time and ultimately pass to his kids and grandkids.

In short: a dependable "paycheck" to live on, and a growth engine to leave behind.

When we walked him through the plan, you could see the anxiety lift in real time. His response said it all: "So I'm going to be okay? I'm not going to run out of money?"

He could retire on his terms - enjoy his family, live comfortably, and still leave something behind for the people he loved.

That moment is one of the best parts of this job. Whatever your situation - simple, complex, or somewhere in between - our work is to understand your problem completely and hand you a solution you can feel good about.

Wondering when you'll be able to retire? Let's find out together.
